At first, we both knew little about the people, their history and their culture. The main reason we found ourselves here in the month of June, 2007 is because George, a former classmate of Loretta was getting his NGO Action to End Exploitation (AEE) going.
AEE is a non-religious, non-partisan organization dedicated to ending exploitation of women and children. Particularly in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, their agenda is to build relationships with the exploited through free clinics and schools. The eventual goal is to free them from exploitation, in most cases sex work, and equip them resources such as education, training, and loans so they can live provide for their families. We were honored and privileged for this opportunity to stand by our friend and join him during the early stages of establishing this not-for profit organization. Knowing that George has been passionately pursuing this for many years, it is exciting to see a dream become reality.
Setting up a non-profit organization takes a lot of work both here in Canada and abroad. And in no ways was our month long journey sufficient but here are a few things we’re chewing on.
